Top Five Holiday Gifts for Boomers Revealed by Eons.com Gadget Survey

Respondents Hold No Nostalgia for Devices of the Past — Holiday Wish List Includes Latest Technology

Charlestown Navy Yard, Boston — Nov. 20, 2007 — Today, Eons.com, the social networking site for adults lovin’ life on the flipside of 50, revealed the most sought-after gadgets of the holiday season for boomers, based on a study of 2,000+ respondents over the age of 50. In addition to revealing the top gadget gifts they crave, the survey examined respondents’ attitudes and activities surrounding technology and found that boomers — much like younger generations — seek the latest in technology such as digital cameras and Internet-ready mobile phones, and do not long for the past when it comes to televisions, music devices and the myriad other technological wonders available to consumers today. Complete survey results are available at www.eons.com/gadgets.

“Boomers are a driving force in the technology revolution. With more disposable income ($2 trillion) than any current or previous generations, they have the means to acquire new technology that simplifies their lives and helps them stay more connected. They are smart consumers and will investigate to get the right price and style,” said Eons Founder and CEO Jeff Taylor. “It’s no wonder, then, that gadgets are on the top of their holiday wish lists.”

The Top Five Gift Gadgets

According to Eons.com, the five gadgets listed in priority that top boomers’ holiday wish lists are:

  1. Flat Screen Televisions — The first TV Generation is still loyal to the medium, but in 2007 boomers seek advanced flat screen televisions to watch their favorite shows in high definition, so out with the old and in with the new!
  2. Phone — Boomers have always wanted to be in control and now they want to have the world in the palms of their hands with the new iPhone from Apple that includes a phone, MP3s, Internet access and more.
  3. Digital Video Recorder — Never mind clunky VCR’s — or even recordable DVD players (who could figure out how to record one program and watch another anyway?). Boomers want to record their favorite television programs, but streamline it with today’s most simple, easy-to-use technology.
  4. Digital Camera — Photos of family and friends are as important as ever, but the same old snapshots are no longer enough. Boomers still want to take their snapshots of life with an 8.0 Megapixel digicam, with a 5X optical zoom. And although 77% of respondents already use digital cameras, many are ready for an upgrade.
  5. Advanced PDA (such as a Blackberry or Treo) — The on-the-go lifestyles of boomers requires more than the ability to make a call from their mobile devices. Many boomers are looking for PDA’s that allow them to stay in touch via email and Internet when they are away from home.

No Nostalgia for the “Old Ways”

While boomers may have fun with nostalgia when it comes to appreciating the TV shows, movies and music that made memories, they don’t miss the gadgets of the past once required to enjoy them. When asked if they missed their old record players, eight track players, transistor radios, walkmans, or any device of the past, 69% said they don’t miss a thing. Of those still feeling a bit nostalgic, a record player was the most missed device (22% of respondents).

Savvy Consumers

Boomers may want the latest gadgets, but they’ve been consumers for too long to rush into buying just anything. Nearly half say that they generally ignore a new gadget until they are convinced they need it; 30% wait for “version II” of a new gadget in hopes that early adopters work through the bugs; meanwhile, 18% hang back, read reviews and make sure they conduct thorough research before investing.

Yet when they do buy, 15% say they are willing to pay $1,000 or more if they are “over the moon” about the technology. Just over 50% of respondents wait for gadgets to go on sale before taking the plunge, while 19% prefer not to spend over $500.

Keep It Simple, Santa

What drives boomers to adopt a new gadget? By far, it’s the prospect of simplifying their lives (75% of respondents). Approximately 14% of boomers are motivated by the desire to be entertained.
